The Liar Society: Review + Giveaway!

The FNC has known LiLa for awhile--since way back, when we were just little newbie bloggers and their book was still called The Haunting of Pemberly Brown.  So, needless to say, I was thrilled when they emailed us asking if we wanted to be a part of their blog tour, and even more excited when our ARC of THE LIAR SOCIETY landed in my lap!

Here's the lowdown:

Kate Lowry attends Pemberly Brown, a swank private school in Cleveland (didn't you know that Cleveland was filled with swank private schools?), which is filled with all sorts of neat things like Latin phrases and uniforms and secrets.  But, not all is right in Kate's world.  In fact, almost nothing is.  At the beginning of last year, everything was awesome--Kate had two BFFs, Grace and Maddie, and a crush on a super-babe.  But then Grace dies in a fire at an abandoned, on-campus chapel.  Then, Maddie ditches her for the Queen Bee of Pemberly Brown.  Kate believes the fire--and Grace's death--weren't just an accident, but she can't find any proof or anyone to believe her.

Until she starts getting emails from her dead best friend.

With Grace's mysterious emails in hand, Kate collects an unusual cast of characters to help her--her nerdy next door neighbor Seth, and the resident bad boy Liam.  Together they begin to realize that Pemberly Brown has WAY more secrets than the average private school, and there's someone out there that doesn't want Kate snooping around.

Pretty awesome, right?  LiLa is hilarious, and I love a good mystery, so I knew I was in for a lot of fun.  And that's exactly what I got.  Reading THE LIAR SOCIETY reminded me why I loved Nancy Drew and Harriet the Spy so much as a child.  The mystery is filled with twists and turns, and while I was able to guess about a few things, there was so much that was a total surprise.  LiLa definitely know how to keep the suspense going.  Every time I thought Kate (and the reader!) had time to breath, something else flew onto the page to keep us moving.

Despite all the action, LiLa still finds time on-page to explore the quieter side of Kate's life.  Light moments become bittersweet as Kate thinks about Grace at unexpected moments, reminding the reader that this really isn't just all fun and games.  I thought they did a good job of balancing the two elements in the story.  I felt just like Kate did--torn between still being upset about Grace's death, but also desperate to figure out the next clue in the mystery.

And of course, what's a YA book without a little romance?  Here, LiLa's balance shines through again. Kate--and the reader--can't help but be intrigued by bad boy Liam.  Except he's more than just a carbon copy of every other bad boy in YA.  Liam's sensitive side shows through from the beginning, not to mention he has secrets of his own.  Secrets that just might have something to do with Grace!  Liam also helps round out snarky Kate and wonderfully dorky Seth as the trio go tromping through Pemberly Brown in search of the truth.

Overall, The Liar Society is fun and fast-paced, and in my book it gets bonus points for being a straight up mystery novel without any angels, devils, werewolves, vampires, etc.  Of course there are plenty of books with those paranormal elements that I really love, but there's definitely something refreshing about a true mystery.

So, are you convinced yet?  Ready to read The Liar Society?  Perfect!  Enter our giveaway below and you could be the lucky new owner of our much-loved ARC!
